Background
As a part of MIT’s capstone mechanical engineering course (2.009, Product Engineering Process), I was a part of a 20-person team. Together, we designed, ideated, prototyped and ultimately produced a beta-level product – Vantage. Our product was designed with the goal to provide children an opportunity to explore and learn about their surrounding world. With a handheld “wand” and a controllable camera housed in a water-resistant shell, users would have the camera’s live footage broadcast to their headset. This tool fused virtual reality and exploration and enabled youngsters to learn and explore at new depths and heights!
Lessons Learned
- Teamwork – organizing and delegating tasks for a complex project across 20-person team
- Leadership – I was the director of safety for our team, so ensured that we were using machine and shop tools safely and effectively
- Machining – Designing and machining metal parts during the prototyping and manufacturing process
- 3D printing, laser-cutting and aesthetic design
